The White House has announced a $40 billion infrastructure spending plan aimed at expanding high-speed broadband access to underserved rural communities across 35 states. The initiative builds on previous broadband investment programs and targets areas where fewer than 25% of households currently have access to reliable internet service.
Under the plan, federal funds will be distributed through competitive grants to state and local governments, electric cooperatives, and tribal entities. The administration expects the program to connect approximately 15 million households by the end of 2028.
Congressional supporters from both parties have endorsed the effort, though disagreements over eligibility requirements and oversight mechanisms could complicate the legislative path forward.
