The House of Representatives has passed legislation requiring all political advertisements that use AI-generated or AI-altered content to include prominent disclosure labels. The bill passed 221 to 214, largely along party lines, with a handful of crossover votes from both sides reflecting the complex political dynamics surrounding AI regulation.

Under the bill, campaigns, PACs, and independent expenditure groups would face fines of up to $50,000 per violation for failing to disclose AI-generated imagery, audio, or video in their advertising. The legislation also tasks the Federal Election Commission with developing specific labeling standards within 180 days of enactment.

Supporters argue the bill is essential for protecting election integrity, while opponents contend that the disclosure requirements are too broad and could inadvertently chill legitimate political speech.
