The White House has announced a $50 billion emergency bridge repair initiative after a federal audit revealed that 46,000 US bridges are structurally deficient and pose safety risks to the traveling public.
The Crisis
The American Society of Civil Engineers gave US bridges a C- grade. Seventeen bridges have been restricted to emergency vehicles only due to structural concerns in the past year alone.
The Plan
Funding will prioritize the 7,500 most critical bridges across all 50 states, with construction beginning this summer. The initiative is expected to create 400,000 construction jobs.
