The Congressional Reparations Study Commission has released its long-awaited final report, recommending an $800 billion package of direct payments, housing assistance, and education funding for descendants of enslaved people.
Report Recommendations
- Direct payments: $50,000 per qualifying individual
- Housing down payment grants: $25,000
- Education fund: $200 billion for HBCUs and scholarships
- Community development: $100 billion for historically Black neighborhoods
The report is advisory and would require congressional legislation to implement. Political analysts give it virtually no chance of passage in the current Congress but say it establishes a framework for future debate.
