Federal infrastructure spending authorized under the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law has reached the $500 billion deployment milestone, with projects now underway in all 50 states. The achievement was announced by the White House infrastructure coordinator at a press briefing.
Road and bridge projects account for the largest share at $180 billion, followed by broadband expansion at $65 billion and clean water infrastructure at $55 billion. Over 45,000 individual projects have been funded since the law's passage.
Economic impact assessments show the spending has created an estimated 800,000 direct construction jobs and supported millions more in related industries. Rural communities have been particular beneficiaries, with many receiving their first major federal infrastructure investments in decades.
Broadband expansion has connected 15 million previously underserved households, though the digital divide remains significant in remote areas. The program aims to achieve universal broadband access by 2028.
Critics point to cost overruns and project delays affecting some major initiatives. Environmental review processes and labor shortages have slowed implementation in certain regions, though the overall pace has exceeded initial projections.
