The White House has issued a new executive order establishing comprehensive procurement standards for artificial intelligence systems purchased or developed by federal agencies. The order requires all AI tools used in government decision-making to undergo third-party bias audits, maintain explainability documentation, and include human oversight mechanisms for consequential determinations.
The standards apply to applications ranging from benefit eligibility screening to immigration processing and federal hiring tools. Agencies will have 12 months to bring existing AI systems into compliance and must publish annual transparency reports on their AI deployments beginning in 2027.
Technology companies that contract with the federal government generally welcomed the clarity provided by the standards, noting that a uniform framework is preferable to navigating inconsistent requirements across individual agencies.
