The Detroit City Council has approved a $300 million expansion of the city's downtown transit network, funded primarily through a combination of federal infrastructure grants and state matching funds. The project will extend the QLine streetcar system by 4.5 miles and add three new bus rapid transit corridors connecting underserved neighborhoods to major employment centers.
City officials project the expansion will serve an additional 45,000 daily riders and reduce average commute times by 22 minutes for residents in the affected corridors. Construction is scheduled to begin in fall 2026, with the first new routes operational by early 2028.
